THE FACTS: NORVAL MORRISSEAU V.S. PABLO PICASSO, calculating the production numbers from a realistic point of view

This just in folks:

A friend of mine and an avid Norval Morrisseau collector sent me this updated calculation on the numbers of realistic production of paintings by both Pablo Picasso and our friend in Norval Morrisseau. So, lets have a look at the real projections so as to set the record straight:

Here's their article:

Despite the point being the same, it was suggested my Picasso numbers were incorrect. My number came from a Fine Art website discussing Picasso art which I thought was accurate. It was not. In my defense, the numbers didn’t matter as you will see because my point was, as I will argue, correct nonetheless.

So, while I don’t believe I would quote an internet movie database, I would go by a more reliable source: Guinness World Records.

According to Guinness (who seek evidence before awarding records):

“Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno de los Remedios Crispín Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruíz y Picasso (1881-1973) of Spain was the most prolific of all professional painters in a career which lasted 75 years. It has been estimated that Picasso produced about 13,500 paintings and designs, 100,000 prints and engravings, 34,000 book illustrations and 300 sculptures and ceramics. His oeuvre has been valued at £500 million (US$788millon).”

So just to address the criticism of the numbers used, we’ll use the Guinness numbers as they require proof for their records to be awarded. The caveat being that Picasso’s production is a moving target (as will be Norval’s). For example, recently there was a large collection of pieces made public by a former Picasso property handy man which were previously unknown and undocumented.

My central argument was that Norval Morrisseau did not produce anything near 15,000 pieces as stated by the Globe and Mail. I believe the Morrisseau children suggested his production was 30,000 pieces which, as you will see, is not believable.

PICASSO:

75 years = 13, 500 paintings

Annual: 180

Daily: 0.5 or ½ per day

MORRISSEAU:

43 years = 15,000 paintings (Globe & Mail's estimate)

Annual: 349

Daily: 0 .95 or 1 per day

So the Globe figure would suggest Morrisseau was TWICE as productive as Picasso as he would have had to produce almost twice as much in almost half the time.

Realistically… Morrisseau was not as productive for the previously noted reasons. Health, poverty, alcoholism.

So what could be more accurate as an estimate of Morrisseau’s production many connoisseurs see 10,000 as too high?

Estimate: 7000 paintings

Annual: 163

Daily: .45 or ½ per day.

So… If we wish to see Norval as being as productive as Picasso… We come to about 7000 paintings as an estimate.

In reworking the numbers, and given all the noted problems Norval had… There is a strong argument that he was not as productive as Picasso. If he wasn’t, then it could be that there are actually less than 7000 pieces produced. It should also be noted that, with time, paintings do get destroyed by the elements or by man. I am aware of one collector in Red Lake, Ontario who was at one time one of Norval’s largest collectors. They had many paintings in a cottage which burned to the ground. The Morrisseau art collection went down with the cottage.

So an intelligent estimate of Morrisseau’s output begins with a perspective. Do you think it’s possible that Norval Morrisseau was more productive than Picasso, less than, or equal to. I think less for stated reasons.

Nobody has said he was more productive than Picasso to date. Not on record.

So that leaves us with equal to or less than.

And with that, I would suggest we are left with a range of estimates which places Morrisseau’s production at somewhere between 5000 and 7000 paintings. If he was more productive, then one can argue 8000. But 15,000 or 10,000? I believe those are fantasies. And there are no facts supporting such estimates which makes them so unlikely that they are false.

So, I believe we are looking at a range of 5000 to 7000 paintings and I believe Norval was very productive but not as much as Picasso judging by the biographical information we know about both individuals.

I would argue as my estimate that Norval Morrisseau produced 5000 to 6000 paintings over his career.

A far smaller number. And the numbers used here, even as the anonymous poster suggested – support my central argument: Norval Morrisseau, as great as he was, was not as productive as Picasso and that the 15,000 pieces suggested by the Globe and Mail is ridiculous and unsupported by facts.

NORVAL MORRISSEAU'S ARTISTIC OUTPUT in "paintings" IS BEING MIS-REPRESENTED BY THE GLOBE & MAIL January 26th, 2012

In reference to the recent globe & mail article about the out of court settlement found here at: Globe & Mail this newspaper outfit had grossly misidentified the artistic output for Norval Morrisseau's painting production. It is this kind of reporting that is done in many outlets throughout the news media without the proper research with experts in the Morrisseau art field and the woodland art scene in general that dilutes the picture of truth for many in the public. There needs to be much better accountability from news sources for the mainstream public to rely on. The proliferation of counterfeit paintings on the market is a serious issue for Morrisseau collectors and admirers and there are actions being taken to help in cleaning up this issue.

Its going to take time my friends. We are trying to do our part on a daily basis, trust me on this, it will get resolved. There are those who have rallied about the forgeries being real, but they are wrong. It is my understanding that every single one of them will be dealt with. There is litigation going on with several lawsuits and issues which will be dealt with through the court system. We all know how this system takes time so, continued perseverance is the ideal in which we should all continue to strive for. Its tough and hard for those involved in the market, but time is what its going to take.

So, lets have a look at the mis-calulation of the Globe & Mail article with regard to the fallacy of 15,000 paintings:

Morrisseau Productivity Fallacy under the microscope:

Globe and Mail (January 27 2012) (new):

“Morrisseau is estimated to have painted as many as 15,000 individual works in his lifetime, with the artist allegedly leaving more than 300 to Vadas’s care at the time of his death.”

Ottawa Citizen (January 2, 2007):

“Cataloging Norval Morrisseau's total artistic output during his lifetime has become a far more difficult task than anyone imagined, with up to 10,000 artworks in circulation.
A six-person committee of experts that formed in 2005 to create a catalogue raisonné listing all of Mr. Morrisseau's artworks has already identified about 1,000 pieces.”

Gabe Vadas: 2010 (new)

Indicated he didn’t believe there were 10,000 because Norval didn’t produce as much as everyone thought he did. He often went long periods not painting anything and also left many paintings behind which were not finished. Also, his alcoholism often interfered with his production.

Roughly a 40-42 year career.

Parkinson's also reduced output as did his knee surgeries and strokes.

15,000 pieces = 375 paintings a year or 1 painting a day for 40 years.

10,000 pieces = 250 pieces a year.

7,000 pieces = 175 pieces a year.

Reality is that the 8000 figure is likely to prove more accurate and is realistic even for a somewhat prolific painter when one considers.

AMENDMENT TO THE PICASSO NUMBERS AS MIS-IDENTIFIED BY A FRIEND WHO WROTE THE PICASSO SECTION HAVE BEEN REMOVED.....sorry for that....we shall stick to just Morrisseau's numbers.....MAJ

While even the math argues against the productivity suggested by the Globe estimate, the demand side of the supply/demand equation also argues a lower number.

Lastly, Norval Morrisseau’s prints were also being fed into the demand side. There are over 230 known to date. Some of which were Open editions with no constraint on number printed. There will probably be 300 to 350 prints published in the end.

It should also be considered when the annual or per day totals are compared, Norval had a tremendous health issue. His alcoholic binges were legendary. The man spent many a day not painting. He also lost time from Parkinson’s. His output levels in the mid 90s to the end of his career could not have sustained the same level of production as in his youth. Morrisseau did have major health issues and alcohol/addiction problems plaguing his production.

So, at the end of the day, with all the combined research that friends of mine and I have done with regard to a much clearer picture of what Norval Morrisseau's "realistic" artistic output would conservatively be with the amount of paintings out there in both public and private collections, I would roughly say the number is more in the 8000 range. The amount of drawings could be in the range of 3000 to 4000. Even for a super prolific artist in Morrisseau, these calculations are more realistic in my professional point of view. Although this is a beautiful ideal, it shall take some time for this to be realized by each and everyone of us. Each of us stands in our own way at times with the various struggles of "self" that we all deal with.

Good morning everyone. Today is a big day for renewed hope and collective change for First nations and those elements involving the Crown and the Government of Canada. There is a lot of speculation about as to whether this is still another cycle of conversation with minimal action, or whether this can be a real opportunity for resetting the relationship which addresses the issues of the Indian act and a better sense of implemented action achieving a meaningful direction for all parties involved. We must find a way to move forward. We must find a way to work together. There really is, no other way.

Brian Marion painting titled: Meeting of 2 nations - Oct. 2008

Late last night, Mr. Brian Marion a.k.a "Little Hummingbird" passed away in Toronto Ont. I remember Brian in a fond light, a playful spirit who was known by many as a wild soul on the woodland art scene. I had chatted with Brian on a few occasions while I lived in Toronto, often reflecting on the woodland art movement, on Norval and Brian's experiences with him, and on life in general. Another good friend of mine named Andrew Bainbridge (K-9), was a former apprentice to Brian's for a few years in Toronto.

Taken from Brian Marion's bio:

Brian Marion was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan in 1960. He grew up among the Saulteaux and Cree of the Prairies and the Ojibway people of Northwestern Ontario. At the age of 15, Brian began a nine year apprenticeship with Norval Morrisseau, considered to be the Father of the Canadian Woodland Aboriginal style of art. According to Morrrisseau, "during those years of training, Brian learned both the spiritualism of the Ojibway culture and the techniques of Shaman art." "As an artist," Morrisseau continues, "he has learned to apply colour to forms that were derived, in part, from ancient pictographs still found in the central region of

Canada

. While he developed his artisitic talents, he was taught to use the meanings of the legends as a basis for the composition of his paintings. He has acquired the knowledge from the visions of our people and has come to understand our close ties with nature. He has been able to get inspiration from his native spirituality and with the blessing of the Creator, add his own emotional and intuitive interpretations to produce beautiful art."

You will always be remembered as a master woodland artist Brian, a brilliant and radiant soul who has touched and will continue to touch the many thousands upon thousands of souls....with your beautiful and shamanistic paintings in the traditions of the woodland art. A friend and fellow apprentice to Norval Morrisseau in Ritchie "stardreamer" Sinclair, was a fond friend of Brians as well. They had a bonafide relationship of brotherhood for 3 decades and Im sure his passing will be felt with a heavy heart for both Ritchie and many others on this day of mourning.....may the winds of change carry all of our heartfelt prayers for the Marion family and friends...until we all meet again, in the big lodge in the sky......all my relations.........MAJ......2011

Good morning friends. Just a quick hello to each and everyone around the woodland art scene. Everything is coming along beautifully isn't it? People are getting educated about authentic works of Norval, people are wising up to the fakes, auction houses are starting to "get it", and hell ya, Norval Morrisseau sells out his recent show at KRG.

Day by day the market gets healthier and those who were or are selling fakes wait for judgement day. I can't wait for that train to come rolling down the tracks. Glad that the energy is getting much cleaner. It's nice to know that Im still getting requests for my opinions as to what is and what isn't a Morrisseau. You betcha, my opinion still means alot to alot of people and Im grateful that I learned about these truths directly from Norval himself when he was alive.

I still can't believe how some still hang on to the "old threadbare idea" that their fakes are real.....lol. Ain't nothing but fools gold. I gotta tell ya though, Im so joyful for all the efforts our team has made over the last few years. We really kicked ass....hahahaha, and we did it for Norval because we love his art, we love what he has laid down with regard to his life's art. The teachings matter to some of us, unlike what I can say about some others and we all know who they are....

Anyways, I wish you all a continued blessing of healing and may the truth continue to enlighten those who need it most. Good morning everyone across Canada and the world. Today is a very special day. This is the official and authorized launch of the Mark Anthony Jacobson Catalogue Raisonne. I am officially the first native artist in Canada to launch such an artistic catalogue of this sort. It is a day where my heart and soul is beaming with a lot of love and light. It has been an intense undertaking thus far to research, find, catalogue and store as much information thus far. There is still a ton of continued research to be done but this marks the first official launch of it's kind for a Canadian native artist and it is an honour to share thus far, of what we have found.

In following and dissecting the very complex issues of forgery and such with regard to one of my mentors in Norval Morrisseau and that of what is beginning to happen to Carl Ray and Roy Thomas, as well as Daphne Odjig, I found it very pertinent to dive into the protection and safe guarding of my own artistic legacy. This catalogue raisonne is my way of not only protecting myself from the harsh realities of the fakers and forgers out there, but it is authorized by me personally to set the record straight as to what makes a Jacobson, a Jacobson.

This resource is offered freely to the Canadian public and everyone around the world. This shall be an on-going process of collecting as much data as possible so that anyone who has questions that need honest answers about my artworks and their authenticity, this catalogue will be the place to seek out that information.

I would like to thank my team of friends and associates who gave of their time freely, to help in assisting me of this very awesome project. I would like to thank my Creator most importantly for inspiring me to paint and in giving me this awesome talent to share with all those through out the world. It's been an incredible summer of adventure and creativity friends. I just got back from Toronto Ont. and was there for about 3 weeks and I had a blast. I did a bunch of new paintings and met up with some incredible souls once again. I hope your summer has gone as well as mine did and I hope the new season of the Autumn Equinox bring a ton of positive harvest for each and everyone.

I decided to share some recent pics in which I got scanned of a joint adventure with the Grand shaman and Canada's national treasure in Norval Morrisseau and myself. These pictures were taken in 2005 during a show Norval and I were apart of with regard to a concept called: The gallery of Giving. All proceeds were then given to the local arts programs in the Nanaimo B.C. area to help with funding the creative ventures of younger artists. I did have a great pleasure in spending quality time with Norval, Gabe and Michelle Vadas. They were always kind and loving towards me and encouraged me to come and visit anytime as they have through out the last few years.

I wish you all nothing but the best and in closing this new post, I will share an image of a recent painting I finished in Toronto Ont. which was one of 10 newly completed paintings.

ELEMENTS OF CREATION FROM RAINBOW THUNDERBIRD, AN HONOURED MEMBER AND GRAND MEDICINE CHIEF OF NORVAL MORRISSEAU'S "BEARWALKER SOCIETY"

Good day friends. I hope all is well with each and everyone of you who have become enlightened to the truth we have shared over the many months in which have passed. I know Im feeling fantastic and Im sure grateful for all the love and support I have received by many of you so, I truly thank you for that. Here are some interesting images I wish to share with you all and I hope you find them inspiring.

I painted this painting in 2008 and called it "The mystics of Motherhood". I dedicated it to all mothers from all nations on Mother Earth. It was a privilege indeed to find such loving inspiration from all the mothers and for their tireless dedication to raising the children in which Mother earth is the leading force.

This painting was created in 2005 and I dedicated the inspiration of this piece to the foundations of mankind which is creation through unity being represented by the 4 colours of man... red, white, yellow and black.

These pieces were inspired and created in 2009 for the "Eagles in the City" a B.C Lions society project here in Vancouver for raising funds for B.C. Sick childrens hospital. There were 120 eagles in all created by many different artists around B.C in which we were all blessed to be a part of. The sponsors of the project helped with material costs and our time in making the pieces was in fact, our donation. It was an honour. During the finishing of the "rainbow eagle", I met a 12 year old girl with her parents who had been fighting for her life since she was born....she told me her struggles and it brought me to tears as I painted....I had not known such a humble spirit as her, it was very emotional and deeply inspiring.

This was a drum I had painted for one of my "apprentices of the Thunderbird clan" in Kelowna B.C. Her name is Kelly and she is one of 5 members in whom it is my privilege to share our contemporary visionary spiritual teachings with. She uses this drum every Thursday in their sweats up there. I had just given her, her indian name no less than 3 months ago in which it took about 8 months to retrieve....it is an honour to do so....and this was one of the many teachings I had received about the gifts associated with my indian name....PEY-SIM-AWAY-APEY-BINASI.

In love, hope, faith and charity....the final piece here is titled "Transformation through meditation". I painted this in honour of the spiritual act of meditation and to honour the great art of listening. It is a skill of divine nature, to be still and know that God is always with you....and that God speaks through people and many other forms of communication. All my relations.........MAJ....2011

WOODLAND ART REFLECTIONS OF THE UNIVERSAL MIND OF THE SOUL/SPIRIT OF RAINBOW THUNDERBIRD

This painting was created in 2009 and was quite reflective of the transformative powers we each have an opportunity to experience when we decide to choose that which leads to our own highest good. The crystal is quite significant as it helps to point us inward to find that most empowering point of self awareness, the awakening of God consciousness. The divine nature of each and everyone of us....

These 2 paintings were created in the fall of 2010, I had painted the one on the right for a sweet darling friend of mine who is an inter-national model and she is currently in Italy modelling...the one on the left is a personal piece reflecting the strength and empowerment of my indian name PEY-SIM-AWAY-APEY-BINASI [Rainbow Thunderbird]. I had such a brilliant experience with the cosmic energy of the spirit world when I was creating them.....it was very moving for me.

This 5 piece series I dedicated to the shamanic merman society of the Great lakes and was painted in 2005 in Vancouver B.C at my studio called "The Artiste" where another famous artist named Lawerence Paul Yuxweluptun and I spent some good time together. He bought one of my paintings as a gift for his wife....

The magical world of being an artist, wow, what a true blessing. I am very thankful for this gift in which has shown me many things about the world of nature, the realms of the spiritual, the Universe and the many relationships with one another and our environment. I am very grateful for all those souls out there who have acquired my works of art through the many originals and various prints that I have put out there over the last 26 years. Good morning friends, here are some photographs I wanted to share today in which I have found some great relationships with these incredible souls. Enjoy this photographic journey of love, hope, faith and charity.....all is wonderfilled and blessed with enlightenment in the realms of these friendships.....all my relations.

Here in this photo is Gabe Vadas, Medicine man Larry A. myself and pro Sovereignty activist Maxwun at the INDN arts in action show during the Olympics in 2010 in Vancouver B.C Canada.....it was so awesome and fun!

Here in this photo is John Rombough, myself and Ritchie"Stardreamer"Sinclair at our joint art show in Toronto Ont. called Welcoming the Winter Solstice 2010, it was such a heartwarming experience for all who attended. We all had revitalized the woodland art movement with such care, passion and love. It will be marked as an unforgettable experience for us....it was simply so beautiful.

Here in this pic is the honourable Don Robinson of KRG, myself, the wonderful John Newman from KRG and Mrs. Trudy Nicks from the Royal Ontario museum in whom attended the artshow mentioned above. That night, we honoured Don with a white eagle feather ceremony for his efforts to help in protecting the authentic artistic legacy of Norval Morrisseau. Brian marion had blessed the eagle feather as a N.A.C. prayer song was sung by Farley Eaglespeaker....it was beautiful.

Here in this photo is the dynamic Don Wright a Thunderbird school artist, myself, Brian Marion and the always fantastic Ritchie"Stardreamer"Sinclair, it was so much fun hanging out together and sharing our spirit filled energies together as brothers in arms...what a beautiful time we had.

Here in this photo is a wonderful good soul in John Z. and I meeting up at the airport. It was a blessed privilege for me to pass on this eagle feather to John [it was his first one ever] and we had such a blast hanging out and spending some great time together. Our bond is tried, tested and true. It's a bona-fide brotherhood...

Here in this pic is me, John Z. and the shaman apprentice and adopted spiritual son to Norval Morrisseau in Gabe Vadas, a brilliant and loving vibe shall always remain, we are after all, so blessed by God....thank you to the both of you for teaching me so much.

Here in this photo are my 2 shamanic uncles in Jimi Oskineegish [a master artist], Victor Kowalow [medicine man] and myself [a Sovereign Integral]. This was a day in which none of us shall ever forget. We shall forever miss our beautiful Angela Dawn Jacobson....she was so brilliant and loved.

Here in this pic is a captured heartfelt moment for me exhibiting my work with the master himself in Norval Morrisseau, the painting I did underneath Norval's piece was dedicated in honour to both Norval Morrisseau and the eternal master in Roy Thomas, my 2 mentors, my elders in the woodland school of shamanistic art. With love always for the both of you, may you both rest in love and peace.

THE ART OF LETTING GO......OF NORVAL MORRISSEAU

Well folks, that's it. Im done. It's time to cleanse my psychic space and rid myself of this negative force and truthfully, to rid myself of those involved in the lies and fraud of the art and legacy of Norval Morrisseau. I've done my part. It's time to move on from this dark horse. Within these last 5 years, I have embarked upon a journey where I discovered perhaps the sickest and most twisted people with regard to those who have tried to deceive so many innocent souls about those fake Morrisseau paintings. What a disgrace. What a national shame and stain on the cultural fabric of this country called Canada.

I have done all I can to educate the public. It's time for me to put more focus on my creative plans for the future. I want to thank my Creator for showing me this light. I went to visit my friends Gabe and Michelle Vadas this weekend on the Island. I laid down my tobacco and shed a few tears in Norval's garden where he planted some beautiful flowers when he was alive. I said my final prayers for everyone involved including those Morrisseau children. I will not offer up a single prayer about any of this in my future. I have said all I have to our Creator. It is finished. I would like to thank the spirit of Norval Morrisseau for showing me while he was alive, what was fake. I will always know this truth about what makes a Norval Morrisseau.......a Norval Morrisseau. I have wiped this blog clean because frankly, I know it has all been saved by those on both sides of this coin. I stand by everything I have ever said. I know it's all on record now so I am not worried at all.

Those in whom I pointed out as forgers, are forgers. Those in whom I know are conspirators of this art fraud, will forever be known as simple cheats and nothing more. To those galleries selling fakes, I will never, ever sell my paintings to you. I don't need you.

To those who will continue forward educating the public about this issue? Be well.

To Gabe and Michelle? I know Norval loved you guys so much, as do I. These people who have slandered you's have no idea at all about who you people are. They don't have any clue at all. You are truly beautiful souls and so kind. So giving and so loving. Im truly grateful for all that you guys and Norval did for one another. Your life and light together shall always shine above the clouds. You have taught me so much about forgiveness and compassion. I will always be your friend.....your brother.

To the Canadian public with regard to buying Norval Morrisseau art? Buyers beware, do your research.
